Ensuring a child knows who they are, is comfortable with themselves and is well equipped to deal with life’s difficulties is very important. Although wanting to protect your child from all of life's ups and downs is natural, it is important to recognise that as individuals we all have to experience both the hardships and the enjoyable parts of being a human. Therefore, shielding children from everything, in the long term, isn’t helpful.

We are living in a world of technology, and everyone is glued to their gadgets as we do most things with them. Almost everyone uses Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, and now TikTok as a way to communicate with friends and even strangers. There is an age restriction with using these applications, nevertheless, it is easy for anyone to forge their age. Nearly all social media applications require their users to be at least 13 years old – this can be found under the applications’ Terms and Conditions. Age restrictions exist because COPPA law or Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act states that any organizations or people operating online services (including social media services) are not allowed to gather the personal data of anyone under the age of 13 without parental permission.
