Diphthongs: "oi" and "oy"

As young students master letter identification and know each letter’s sound(s), more complex phonics skills are then taught. Diphthongs are a more advanced phonics skill. Practice and mastery of diphthongs gives students the ability to decode more words and that leads to better reading fluency.

The video teacher explains that a diphthong is a vowel sound made by two vowels. The worksheet provides practice for the two diphthongs: oy and oi. These diphthongs make the same sound and she tells the students that if the sound is heard at the end of the word, then the diphthong oy is used to spell the word. If the sound is heard at the beginning or middle of a word then the oi is used. The task on the worksheet is to choose the correct diphthong to complete the spelling of the word.  The teacher carefully sounds out each word and chooses the correct answer.

Practice common diphthongs oi and oy with this worksheet. Learn the sound and how to spell words with the correct diphthong.
