Skills to Teach Kids Together with Teaching Writing

Oct. 11, 2015

Some of us may think that in order to know how to write kids need to know how to draw straight lines, curved lines, and circles, as well as to have a correct pencil grip. However, these are not the only things we need to teach our children.

How many of you laughed your heads off when you saw kids holding a book upside down or “reading” it backwards? I guess, we all witness such scenes from time to time. What looks natural to us, adults, needs to be ta

ught to our kids.

Here’s just a short list of things about writing that kids should know and that we adults already take for granted:

  • We write from left to write and from top to bottom.
  • Separate words should have spacing between them.
  • Each letter has its own formation.
  • The correct stroke sequence for each letter helps develop a legible consistent cursive style.
  • The letters should have the same slope and size.
  • There’s a correct pen/pencil grip that we should teach our kids.
  • Handwriting for lefties is different from one for right-handers .
  • Make sure your children can sit with their feet on the floor and their arm can move freely wherever they write, at home or school.
  • Make sure that YOU are holding your pencil and forming your letters correctly because your child will copy YOU.
