In this lesson, students will read a short story about Codey, then use code blocks to create their own short story with a main idea. Coding activities include using the "say" blocks to type out a passage with a main idea, animating an Actor, and using the "ask" block to ask a question. Students are provided the necessary visual assets (backgrounds, costumes, Actors) and code blocks in the DIY module.
After completing the DIY module, students will be asked 5 quiz questions that test their knowledge on identifying the main idea of a given story. By the end of the lesson, students will have experimented with coding concepts (e.g., animation, input/output, messaging, motion, if-else statements) while reinforcing the main idea of a story. If students finish early, encourage them to customize their DIY project by changing the background or create a new main idea project about a different topic.
