Identify Consonants - Lesson for Kindergarten, Chapter - Letter Sound Relationships

In the "Identify Consonants" lesson, part of the Early Phonics and Phonological Awareness unit, kindergarten students embark on an engaging journey to understand letter sound relationships, focusing specifically on consonants. Through activities such as the "Circle the Consonants Worksheet" and the "Let's Look for Consonants Worksheet," students will learn to recognize and differentiate consonant sounds from vowels, a foundational skill in phonics.

This lesson is crucial as it lays the groundwork for reading and spelling skills. By identifying consonants, students enhance their phonological awareness, an essential component of literacy development. Phonological awareness involves recognizing and manipulating sounds in spoken language, a skill linked to successful reading outcomes. As students become adept at distinguishing consonant sounds, they are better equipped to decode words, leading to improved reading fluency and comprehension.

Furthermore, understanding consonants enriches students' ability to spell correctly and boosts their confidence in writing. This foundational skill paves the way for more complex literacy tasks, making it an essential stepping stone in the educational journey of young learners. Through interactive and enjoyable activities, kindergarten students will not only master identifying consonants but also build a strong base for lifelong literacy.

  • Activity 1 / Circle the Consonants Worksheet

Vowels and consonants are the letters that make up the alphabet. Before beginning this worksheet, teach your kids that there are 5 vowels, and tell them what they are. Then, teach them that there are 21 consonants in the alphabet. You can give them some common examples of words that begin with some consonants. Ask them to recite the alphabet if they can. Look at this simple printout with your little ones, and help them circle all of the consonants.

  • Activity 2 / Let's Look for Consonants Worksheet

Use this worksheet to teach your little kids the consonants that we have in the alphabet, and examples of words that begin with these consonants. First, ask your kids to recite all the letters of the alphabet, and then ask them if they know what consonants are. Teach them that consonants are the letters in the alphabet which are not vowels, and since there are 5 vowels, that would make the consonants 21. Ask your kids to look at the items in this printout, and help them circle the images that do not start with a consonant.
