  • Activity 1 / Reading: Long I and IE Worksheet

The vowel combination can be used in other ways and come out sounding different, but in some cases, it can make the long /i/ sound; as found in ‘pie’. Ask your child to give you some more examples of words that have the long /i/ sound, if they can’t, help them with some common words. Now, together with your child, read each word in this worksheet aloud. Help them circle the box next to the correct word to fill in the blank.

  • Activity 2 / Reading: Long E and IE Worksheet

When the vowels ie are put together, they can make another sound entirely, such as the long /e/ sound, which is found in the word ‘chief’. Before continuing this exercise, ask your child if they can name some of the common words with the long /e/ sound which they use every day. Then, help them read aloud all the words in this worksheet. Ask them to circle the words with this vowel combination that make the long /e/ sound.
