Representing Addition with Base Ten Blocks

There are many strategies teachers use to help young learners master addition. Using base ten blocks is one of them! This video is a great teaching tool for teachers that explains how to use base ten blocks to represent numbers when adding.

In the video, the teacher explains that base ten is simply a way to organize numbers. For this exercise, the teacher shows that one cube, or one unit, is equal to one. Ten cubes connected into one column represents the number 10.

When the teacher explains the worksheet, students will count the blocks to find the total and choose the correct addition equation that is represented by the blocks. The teacher uses the “counting on” method to find the total.

Use base ten blocks as a tool to teach counting, addition, subtraction, and even place value. Students using base ten blocks develop a deeper understanding of these math concepts. Save this video for use in the math classroom!
