Compound Words

Learning about compound words is so much fun with this video and worksheet! A compound word is a word made by combining two other words. The new word has a new meaning. Learning about compound words increases children’s vocabulary and students learn from compound words that words can have parts. This leads to future learning about prefixes, base words and suffixes.

Here are examples of compound words:

Foot+ball      Football

Ear+ring       Earring

Sun+light      Sunlight

In the video, the teacher defines compound words and explains the worksheet practice task.  On the worksheet students read a sentence and choose the correct compound word to complete the sentence. A picture clue accompanies each sentence. The teacher reads each sentence and all answer choices. Children read each compound word in context and choose the correct answer.

Learn what a compound word is and use picture and context clues to complete sentences with instruction from the video and teacher.
