Addition and Subtraction Word Problems

Word problems are tricky. Students have to discern what is the important information in the problem and be able to identify key words that give clues to the math operations needed to solve the problem. The task is even more difficult when students have to perform more than one computation to find the answer. Help clear away any confusion with multi-step word problems with this video.

In the video, the teacher reads the word problems and works the problem step-by step on the white board. In the first problem students first have to add to find the total number of pictures taken by the student. Then to find the final answer, the students need to subtract the number of pictures used from the total to find how many pictures were not used. The teacher carefully explains each computation.  Another word problem is then completed.

This practice worksheet requires both borrowing and carrying of two numbers to solve one of the number stories. Practice multi-step word problems today and use this video in your math classroom.
