Area Formula

Teaching students how to calculate the area of a shape or flat surface has never been so easy! In this video, the Kids Academy teacher carefully explains that area is the number of unit squares in, or that cover, a shape. The teacher instructs the students that to find the area, you use the equation of:

AREA=Length X Width

To demonstrate how to use the formula, the teacher shows the students how to count the unit squares on a shape—first the number of squares in the length of the shape and then the number of squares in the width of the shape.  He uses the whiteboard to write the multiplication problem. To find the answer, the teacher skip counts as a strategy to find the total.

With this instructional format, students can hear the teacher clearly explain the process as well as see how each problem is solved.  This video on finding area is a great addition to the math classroom.
