Standards-Aligned ELA Worksheets for Elementary Students

April 9, 2025

Kids Academy allows you to filter and find worksheets based on the standards they align with. Today we will explore the most important skills that are included in elementary ELA standards and will have a look at a selection of matching worksheets from our website.

Something important to remember is that the English Language Arts is a recursive subject area, which means that the same foundational skills are covered repeatedly, but with varying complexity. Join us as we take a deep dive into the highest priority skills that little learners must master in elementary school.

Interactive ELA Worksheets for Grades K-3

ELA encompasses a wide breadth of skills, but in short, the standards include both reading and writing, and everything related to a multitude of texts. Like the math standards, the ELA standards are comprised of foundational skills. These include reading basics, writing, speaking, and listening, as well as working with different types of texts, such as informational and literary ones.

Core skills by grade:

  • Kindergarten: Print concepts, phonics, analysing literature and nonfiction texts

Kindergarteners explore print through letter recognition; simultaneously learn to recognize and write their ABCs, as in the first worksheet pictured above. When learning to read, they identify similar sounds, like rhyming words, before learning specific sounds for vowels and consonants. Since most children cannot read at this age, worksheets are designed for listening while learners point out elements of the text they hear while working with an adult.

  • 1st Grade: Writing conventions, reading fluency, and literary craft

In grade 1, kids learn the basics of writing in earnest; they cover writing conventions from punctuation, capitalization to sentence structure. The first worksheet above helps learners understand that sentences are made up of a variety of words to create a sentence. First graders also increase their vocabulary through sight words, and they explore different types of stories.

  • 2nd Grade: Informational texts, main ideas and theme, and word parts

2nd graders take reading to a whole different level as they think about author’s purpose, discover different types of texts, and increase their vocabulary by studying word parts, such as prefixes and suffixes. They cross these skills over to their own writing as they write different types of texts, too!

  • 3rd Grade: Grammar, text features, and literary elements

By grade 3, learners are mastering concepts from across the ELA spectrum ranging from grammar and spelling to informational text features and literary terms. While it’s difficult to single out just a few examples from our worksheets, those posted above showcase the complexity of the grammar rules they learn, as well as the varied concepts they explore contained within different types of texts.
