Irregular Spelling

Irregular Spelling

In this lesson, students will watch a short presentation where an Actor says a rhyme and gives an example of three different irregularly spelled words. Next, students will use the given code blocks in the DIY module to create a project about identifying irregularly spelled words. In the DIY module, students will make apple Actors appear and disappear and will use “say” blocks to type a rule about spelling or grammar. The DIY module also includes a bonus activity where students can use a loop to repeatedly turn the apple Actors to the right.
After completing the DIY module, students will be asked 5 quiz questions that test their knowledge on identifying the correct spelling of irregularly spelled words. Words mentioned in the quiz include "weird," "science," and "foreign." By the end of the lesson, students will have experimented with coding concepts (e.g., messaging, loops, events, direction and turning) while reinforcing the correct spelling of irregularly spelled wods. If students finish early, encourage them to experiment with the bonus activity (titled “Spinning Apples”) in the DIY module. How fast can they spin the apple Actors? What happens when they change the number inside the “turn” block?
